Why does Search Console say "Crawled - currently not indexed" after I submit a sitemap?

It means Google successfully crawled the URL but decided not to add it to the index yet. Submitting a sitemap helps Google discover pages; it doesn’t make them indexable or guarantee indexing. I’d check the URL Inspection report for the live page’s status, whether Google can fetch a normal 200 page, noindex or robots issues, and whether Google chose a different canonical. Then look at the page itself: a thin, duplicate, or near-duplicate page is less likely to be indexed just because it was submitted. Fix any real issue, make the page clearly useful and internally linked, request indexing once, then give it time. Repeated sitemap submissions usually won’t change that decision.
